The Little Broom Maker
Beyond the last fence of the Farmstead,
where the path narrows beneath the trees,
there is a small cottage hidden in the Hollow.
That is where the Little Broom Maker lives.
She gathers fallen branches from the woodland floor
and saves the long, dry grasses when the season turns.
Nothing useful is hurried past,
and very little is wasted.
On her little twig bench she sits,
binding each broom by hand—
wrapping, tying, trimming,
until it is ready for its work.
Some are made for hearths.
Some for porches and old wooden floors.
And some find their way down the path
to the Farmstead.
No one quite knows how long
the Little Broom Maker has lived in the Hollow.
But when the grasses are dry
and the leaves begin to turn,
you may hear the quiet rustle of her work
somewhere beyond the trees.
